At AromaCrafters, we believe what you don’t put in your candles is just as important as what you do. While our all-natural waxes burn clean and safe, many conventional candles are filled with hidden, harmful ingredients that compromise both your health and your home’s air quality. That’s why we’ve created our DirtyList™—a no-go list of wax ingredients we wouldn’t let near our products (or your home).
1. Paraffin Wax: The Petroleum Problem
Most commercial candles are made from paraffin, a byproduct of petroleum refining. When burned, paraffin releases harmful chemicals like toluene and benzene—both known carcinogens. That might explain those mysterious headaches after lighting a candle.
2. Synthetic Fragrance Additives
While not technically a wax ingredient, synthetic fragrances are often blended into the wax itself. These artificial scents can release phthalates and other endocrine disruptors when burned, affecting hormone balance and overall health.
3. Stearic Acid from Animal Fats
Some candle makers add stearic acid to harden their wax—nothing wrong with that, unless it comes from animal fats. This is a hidden ingredient that’s not only unnecessary but also problematic for vegans and anyone looking for clean, plant-based products.
4. UV Stabilizers and Dyes
To keep colors bright and wax looking pristine, many candles use chemical UV stabilizers and synthetic dyes. These may release toxins when burned and don’t add anything to the candle’s performance—just more junk in your air.
5. Heavy Metals in Wicks
Okay, it’s not technically in the wax, but it’s worth mentioning: Some candle wicks are still made with lead or other metals to keep them upright. When burned, these metals can release toxins into the air. You’ll never find that in an AromaCrafters candle.
